Laufey (pronounced Lay-vay) is an Icelandic-Chinese artist making waves in the jazz-pop scene. Her ability to merge classic jazz influences with modern sounds has captivated a diverse audience, bringing new life to an age-old genre.

Born Laufey Lín Jónsdóttir in Reykjavík, Iceland, she grew up surrounded by music. With a mother who is a classical violinist from China and an Icelandic father, she was encouraged to explore her musical passions from a young age. She started playing the cello and piano and eventually made her way to the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where her eclectic background and classical training informed her unique musical style.

Laufey’s rise to fame was catalysed during the pandemic. In 2020, she began sharing videos of her performing jazz standards and original compositions on social media. Her first EP, Typical of Me, released in 2021, caught the attention of listeners, but it was her debut album, Everything I Know About Love, released in 2022, that truly established her presence in the music industry. Tracks like “Valentine” and “Let You Break My Heart Again” went viral, resonating with audiences through their heartfelt lyrics and lush melodies. Her warm voice offers a comforting presence, making her music particularly appealing during challenging times.

Her catalogue includes memorable tracks that showcase her talent and creativity. “Valentine” is a beautifully crafted tribute to love, while “From the Start” delivers an upbeat, jazzy vibe that became popular on TikTok. Another highlight is “Let You Break My Heart Again,” a stunning ballad accompanied by the Philharmonia Orchestra. In 2023, her album Bewitched further showcased her artistic growth. This album includes tracks like “California and Me” and “Promise” and received critical acclaim for its depth and innovation.

In 2022, following her debut album, Laufey launched her first headline tour, performing to sold-out venues across North America and Europe. Her Bewitched Tour (2023–2024) has been particularly notable, with tickets disappearing almost instantly in major cities like London, New York, Los Angeles, and Tokyo. She is known for her intimate performances, often accompanied by string players or small jazz groups, which create a personal and elegant live experience.

Critics have described Laufey as a “modern-day jazz muse,” recognising her unique ability to breathe new life into classic sounds while remaining authentic. Her album Bewitched earned her a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album in 2024, further solidifying her status as a respected artist of her generation. Major publications such as Rolling Stone, The Guardian, and NPR have highlighted her songwriting for its emotional depth and sophistication.
