BABYMETAL is a Japanese kawaii metal band, a unique musical phenomenon that blends heavy metal with J-pop idol aesthetics. The group, originally consisting of Suzuka Nakamoto (Su-metal), Moa Kikuchi (Moametal), and Yui Mizuno (Yuimetal, who departed in 2018), was formed in 2010 by the talent agency Amuse Inc.

Their breakthrough moment arrived with the viral success of their 2014 single “Gimme Chocolate!!”. The song’s unexpected fusion of sugary pop vocals and aggressive metal instrumentation surprised the world, leading to widespread international attention and a rapidly growing global fan base. This propelled their self-titled debut album, BABYMETAL (2014), to chart success in various countries.

BABYMETAL’s greatest hits showcase their distinctive and evolving sound. Beyond “Gimme Chocolate!!”, other prominent tracks include “Megitsune”, which incorporates traditional Japanese elements into its heavy sound; “Ijime, Dame, Zettai” (No More Bullying), a powerful anthem often used to close their early shows; “Karate”, known for its strong riff and martial arts-inspired choreography; and “Road of Resistance”, an epic, power metal-infused track often featuring guest guitarists. In 2016, they made history as the first Japanese act to headline London’s Wembley Arena, marking an important milestone in their career. The band has also been a regular fixture at major UK festivals, including Download Festival and Reading and Leeds Festivals, where they consistently deliver high-energy performances that captivate a diverse audience.

They have received considerable acclaim and numerous awards for their innovative approach to music. BABYMETAL has won multiple Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards, including “Breakthrough” and “Best International Band”, as well as various Kerrang! Awards. Additionally, they have been recognised at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan, winning “Best Album of the Year” for Metal Resistance and “Best Metal Video” for “Karate”. Although they have not yet won a Grammy Award, their consistent global touring and impressive album sales highlight their commercial and critical success.
