Max Verstappen claimed a commanding victory at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, making a bold first-lap move around the outside of Oscar Piastri at Turn 1 and never looking back. The Red Bull driver controlled the race throughout, even after a late safety car bunched the field and brought the McLarens of Piastri and Lando Norris back into contention.
Verstappen’s second win of the season cuts his deficit to Norris in the Drivers’ Championship to just 9 points, with Piastri now leading the Briton by 13. For Red Bull, it was a fitting result on the occasion of their 400th Grand Prix.
Strategic Gambles at McLaren
McLaren’s strategy was in the spotlight. Piastri, having lost the lead at the start, was pitted early in an effort to undercut Verstappen but lost track position and tyre advantage. A mid-race Virtual Safety Car (VSC) and a later full Safety Car shuffled the order again.
Norris, who had stopped later and had fresher tyres, was told Piastri’s tyres “looked pretty dead” but McLaren chose not to impose team orders. The two raced hard before Norris overtook with five laps to go to finish second, while Piastri settled for third.
Hamilton and Leclerc Battle Behind
Lewis Hamilton climbed from 12th to finish fourth for Ferrari, benefiting from an offset strategy and two perfectly timed tyre changes under the VSC and Safety Car. He passed team-mate Charles Leclerc late on, whose worn tyres left him vulnerable.
Leclerc later had to cede fifth place to Alex Albon after being judged to have forced the Williams driver off track. George Russell dropped to seventh after starting third, struggling with tyre degradation in his Mercedes.
Points Finishers & Hard-Luck Stories
Carlos Sainz (8th), Isack Hadjar (9th), and Yuki Tsunoda (10th) completed the points. Fernando Alonso, who started fifth, was unlucky with strategy and tyre availability, falling to 11th.
What’s Next?
F1 heads to Monaco next weekend with an added twist: mandatory two pit stops for all drivers to help shake up the strategy around the famously narrow and processional street circuit.
