Oscar Piastri claimed his fourth win in six races at the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, delivering another polished performance to extend his championship lead over team-mate Lando Norris. McLaren secured a dominant one-two finish after a dramatic and eventful race marked by aggressive overtakes, strategic calls, and intra-team tension across the grid.

Starting from fourth, Piastri executed clean and decisive moves to pass Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli and then Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. His pass on Verstappen came on lap 14 after several failed attempts, using DRS to force the Dutchman into a mistake at Turn One before cutting back for the lead. Once ahead, Piastri managed his pace and held off a charging Norris, who had dropped to sixth early on after a wide moment while battling Verstappen.

Norris regrouped and surged through the field, eventually overtaking Verstappen on lap 18 after an earlier failed attempt that saw him run off track. Although Norris began closing the gap to Piastri, the Australian increased his pace late in the race to secure a comfortable win by maintaining a consistent margin.

Behind the McLaren pair, George Russell secured third place for Mercedes. Russell, who started on hard tyres, capitalized on a well-timed virtual safety car to pit and rejoin ahead of Verstappen. Despite Red Bull lodging a protest claiming Russell failed to slow under yellow flags, stewards dismissed the complaint. Verstappen struggled to recover and settled for fourth, unable to close the gap to Russell.

Ferrari team orders

The race also featured drama at Ferrari, where team orders created tension between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. Running different tyre strategies, Hamilton was eventually allowed past Leclerc to chase Antonelli but couldn’t overtake the Mercedes. Ferrari then ordered Hamilton to give the position back late in the race, a call he initially resisted. Leclerc suggested focusing on chasing Antonelli instead, but the team insisted, and Hamilton complied.

Alex Albon delivered a standout performance for Williams, finishing a strong fifth and beating team-mate Carlos Sainz. Antonelli held off the Ferrari duo to secure sixth. Sainz ultimately finished ninth after briefly challenging Hamilton on the final lap, while Yuki Tsunoda claimed the last point in 10th despite a penalty for speeding in the pit lane.

McLaren history

The win marks McLaren’s third consecutive victory—something the team hasn’t achieved since Mika Häkkinen in 1998. Piastri now leads the championship by 16 points from Norris, with Verstappen another 16 behind.
