Max Verstappen kept his championship hopes alive with a decisive victory at the Qatar Grand Prix, setting up a three-way title decider between the Dutchman, Lando Norris, and Oscar Piastri at next weekend’s finale in Abu Dhabi. The Red Bull driver capitalised on a costly strategic misstep from McLaren under an early safety car, overturning the team’s advantage and claiming his seventh win of the season.

Piastri finished second after a spirited late chase, while Carlos Sainz delivered another standout performance to take third for Williams. Norris recovered to fourth after a difficult race that briefly threatened to end his title bid, salvaging two crucial points with a late overtake on Kimi Antonelli.

McLaren’s Strategy Gamble Backfires

The defining moment of the race came on lap seven when Pierre Gasly and Nico Hülkenberg collided at Turn One, triggering a safety car. With exactly 50 laps remaining — matching the strict 25-lap tyre limit imposed by Pirelli — nearly the entire field opted to pit. McLaren, however, chose to stay out with both cars, prioritising strategic flexibility over immediate track position.

That decision ultimately handed control to Verstappen. While rivals locked in their strategies, the McLarens were forced into a sequence that left them vulnerable in the final stint. Once the Red Bull made its final stop, Norris and Piastri did not have the pace or tyre advantage to reclaim the lead, leaving McLaren ruing a call that proved decisive.

Piastri later convinced the team to pit early for his final stop in an attempt to chase Verstappen down, but despite reducing the gap to eight seconds, the Australian ran out of laps. “Clearly we didn’t get it right tonight,” he said. “In hindsight it’s obvious what we should have done.”

Verstappen Seizes the Moment

Verstappen executed a clean and controlled race, managing his tyres and pace without taking unnecessary risks. Red Bull’s decision to pit under the safety car allowed him to jump both McLarens once the strategies unfolded, and despite late pressure from Piastri, the four-time champion remained unchallenged.

“This was an incredible race for us,” Verstappen said. “We made the right call to box, and I’m super-happy to keep the fight alive. It wasn’t easy this weekend, but we still got it done.”

Verstappen’s victory moves him to within 12 points of Norris heading to the finale, and four points ahead of Piastri.

Norris Salvages Vital Points

Norris’ race was marked by frustration and near-disaster. A huge moment at Turn 14 on lap 35 — where he narrowly avoided a high-speed crash — cost him time just as McLaren were attempting to build the gap needed for their final stop. After rejoining in fifth, Norris became stuck behind Antonelli’s Mercedes, only clearing the Italian when he ran wide with just over a lap to go.

The Briton then rapidly closed on Sainz, finishing just 0.6 seconds behind the Williams driver at the flag. Though disappointed, Norris’s late charge ensured he retains the championship lead heading into Abu Dhabi.

Sainz Shines Again

Carlos Sainz delivered one of the standout performances of the evening to claim his second podium of the year. Taking advantage of McLaren’s strategy call and strong early-race pace, the Williams driver held firm in the closing laps to take third ahead of Norris and Antonelli.

Behind them, George Russell took sixth, with Fernando Alonso recovering to seventh despite a costly spin. Charles Leclerc, Liam Lawson, and Yuki Tsunoda completed the points-paying positions after a turbulent midfield battle.

Analysis: Title Battle Goes to Abu Dhabi

For the first time since 2021, Formula 1 will decide a championship at the final race. Norris enters Abu Dhabi with a 12-point advantage over Verstappen, with Piastri just four points further back. The scenario is simple: if Verstappen wins, Norris must finish at least third to become world champion.

McLaren’s strategic error in Qatar will fuel intense debate, but with one race left and all three contenders separated by just 16 points, the stage is set for one of the most dramatic finales in recent years.

What’s Next?

The season concludes at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina, where the twilight setting has hosted some of Formula 1’s most iconic title deciders. With everything on the line, Norris, Verstappen, and Piastri head into the final round knowing that a single mistake could define the 2025 world championship.
