History of the Formula 1 Turkish Grand Prix

The Turkish Grand Prix made its Formula One World Championship debut in 2005 at the purpose-built Istanbul Park circuit in Tuzla, on the Asian side of Istanbul. Designed by renowned track architect Hermann Tilke, the circuit immediately won widespread praise for its flowing, demanding layout — a stark contrast to many modern venues. The race was held annually from 2005 to 2011 before financial difficulties and declining crowds led to its removal from the calendar.

Turkey returned to Formula 1 twice during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, when the disrupted calendar required additional venues at short notice. Both editions were well received, reigniting fan enthusiasm for the circuit. Now, Istanbul Park is set to make a permanent comeback, with the Turkish Grand Prix confirmed on the Formula 1 calendar from 2027 until at least 2031 — giving fans a long-awaited chance to experience one of the sport’s most beloved tracks once again.

Istanbul Park is the track where Lewis Hamilton clinched his record-equalling seventh world drivers’ title in 2020, one of the most iconic moments in the sport’s recent history. Grab your Turkey F1 tickets while you can from Fanatix.

Key Corners at Istanbul Park

Turn 8 — “Diabolica”

Turn 8 is widely regarded as one of the greatest corners in Formula 1 history. A long, sweeping left-hander with four distinct apexes, it places enormous lateral loads on both car and driver and is particularly punishing on tyres. Drivers and spectators alike have compared it to legendary corners such as Eau Rouge at Spa and 130R at Suzuka. Such is its reputation that Tilke used it as inspiration for subsequent designs, including Turns 17 and 18 at the Circuit of the Americas.

Turn 1 — “The Turkish Corkscrew”

A sharp, downhill left-hander immediately after the main straight, Turn 1 has earned the nickname “The Turkish Corkscrew” for its similarity to the famous Corkscrew at Laguna Seca. It has historically been a hotspot for incidents and is one of the primary overtaking opportunities around the lap.

“Faux Rouge”

The uphill kink in the middle of the back straight draws frequent comparisons to Eau Rouge at Spa-Francorchamps, earning its tongue-in-cheek nickname among fans and drivers. The combination of elevation change and speed makes it one of the most visually dramatic sections of the circuit.

Turn 1 Grandstand

FAQs about Turkey F1 Tickets

When is the 2027 Turkish Grand Prix?

The exact date of the 2027 Turkish Grand Prix has not yet been confirmed. Formula 1 typically announces the following season’s calendar in the autumn of the preceding year. Check back on Fanatix for updates as soon as the schedule is released.

Has Formula 1 raced at Istanbul Park before?

Yes. Istanbul Park hosted the Turkish Grand Prix from 2005 to 2011, and the circuit returned for two further editions during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021. The 2027 race will be the first Turkish Grand Prix under normal conditions since 2011, making it a highly anticipated return for fans who remember the circuit’s golden era.

What makes Istanbul Park special?

Istanbul Park is widely considered one of Hermann Tilke’s finest creations and has been called one of the best race tracks in the world. Its anti-clockwise layout, dramatic elevation changes across four different ground levels, and the legendary Turn 8 — a four-apex left-hander unlike any other corner in Formula 1 — give it a unique character that drivers and fans adore. Tyre wear is typically a critical strategic factor throughout the race weekend.

Can I visit Istanbul while attending the Grand Prix?

Absolutely, and it is highly recommended. Istanbul is one of the world’s great cities, straddling Europe and Asia across the Bosphorus. The historic old city, the Grand Bazaar, the Bosphorus cruise and the city’s legendary food scene make it an outstanding destination to combine with a Formula 1 weekend. Allow extra travel time between the city and the circuit, as the track is located on the Asian outskirts of Istanbul.

What is the weather like in Istanbul during the Grand Prix?

The exact timing of the 2027 race is yet to be confirmed. Historically, the Turkish Grand Prix has been held in May and also in November during the pandemic years. May conditions in Istanbul are generally warm and mostly dry, with average temperatures around 18–22°C, though spring showers are not uncommon. The 2020 race in November was held in famously wet and cold conditions that produced one of the most memorable grands prix in recent years.

Is there a track invasion after the race?

Track invasions are subject to the circuit’s specific policies and local regulations. Check official event information closer to race weekend for details on post-race fan access at Istanbul Park.
