History of the Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is golf’s most prestigious team event — a biennial showdown between Europe and the United States that transcends individual glory for national pride. First contested in 1927, the competition was named after English businessman Samuel Ryder, who donated the iconic golden trophy. What began as a friendly competition between Great Britain and the United States has evolved into one of sport’s greatest spectacles, with Europe (expanded to include continental players in 1979) producing some of the most dramatic moments in golf history.

Held every two years, alternating between venues in the United States and Europe, the Ryder Cup is unique in golf — players compete for pride and country, not prize money. The format features foursomes, four-balls, and singles matches across three days, creating an atmosphere of intensity and emotion rarely seen in professional golf.

Modern stars such as Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, and Viktor Hovland continue to add new chapters to this storied rivalry.

Atmosphere & Prestige

The Ryder Cup atmosphere is electric and unlike anything else in golf. Passionate fans create a stadium-like environment with chants, songs, and unwavering support for their team. The camaraderie among players, the weight of history, and the raw emotion on display make the Ryder Cup an unmissable experience for any golf fan.
