Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted his team are still looking to reinforce this summer, with the departure of Cesc Fabregas to Barcelona adding further funds to his transfer coffers.
It is thought that a central defender is high on that list – as well as Laurent Koscielny and Thomas Vermaelen played yesterday against Newcastle United, and Wenger is thought to be eyeing up Germany international Per Mertesacker.
He will be boosted by the words of Werder Bremen chairman Willi Lemke regarding the potential sale of Mertesacker.
“If clubs come and ask, we would grant their request for selling these players [Mertesacker and Bremen goalkeeper Tim Wiese],” confirmed Lemke.
“Simply because they are on outrunning deals and unlike this season we would not receive any money for their services next summer.”
Mertesacker signing would leave either Vermaelen or Johan Djourou free to play an anchor role in midfield when Alex Song is suspended, injured or at the African Cup of Nations.
