Arsenal defensive midfielder set to make FC Schalke 04 switch.
Arsenal are considering an offer from FC Schalke 04 for midfielder Francis Coquelin, according to a report in the paper version of L’Equipe, referenced here on FootMercato.
The Frenchman has struggled to gain a regular place in the Gunners team, with Mikel Arteta and Aaron Ramsey preferred in the deep midfield positions, and having just turned 22 years-old, Coquelin may elect to move on this summer.
Though L’Equipe do not state whether the deal for Coquelin is to be permanent or a loan, it is suspected that it will be a full transfer.
FC Schalke 04 likely see Coquelin as a long term replacement for Jermaine Jones in the anchor role, with the United States international now 31 years of age.
Coquelin would add dynamism, a defensive shield, and accurate passing to the Bundesliga side, but has not been afforded the luxury of learning on the job at Arsenal as the stakes have been so high with the club constantly on the verge of glory and collapse.
He would find a stable environment in Gelsenkirchen, and could develop into a fine midfielder with the club on the verge of the UEFA Champions League.
