History of the Hamburg Open

The Hamburg Open, officially known as the Bitpanda Hamburg Open, is one of the most historic tournaments on the ATP Tour. First held in the late 19th century, it is the fifth oldest tennis tournament in the world , played on the outdoor clay courts of the Rothenbaum Tennis Centre in Hamburg’s elegant Harvestehude quarter. For much of its history the tournament was contested in May as a key precursor to the French Open , cementing its place as one of the most important stops on the European clay-court season. Roger Federer is the record title holder in Hamburg, having claimed four titles in the space of six years between 2002 and 2007. His victories included a landmark moment in tennis history — his 2007 triumph over Rafael Nadal, which snapped the Spaniard’s remarkable 81-match winning streak on clay. Other past champions include Ivan Lendl, Mats Wilander, and Carlos Alcaraz, while Alexander Zverev became the first German men’s singles titlist in Hamburg for 30 years when he won the title in 2023. Most recently, Flavio Cobolli claimed the 2025 title, defeating Andrey Rublev 6–2, 6–4 in the final.
