The 2026 Formula 1 season gets underway at the iconic Albert Park Circuit for Round 1, the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, where a brand new era of Formula 1 begins. The biggest regulation overhaul in the sport’s history introduces new-look cars and engines, promising a reshuffled grid and potentially some fresh faces at the front of the field.

Following the season opener in Melbourne, the calendar heads straight to Shanghai for the Chinese Grand Prix on 13–15 March, which also doubles as the first sprint event of the year. With 24 races on the schedule and so much still unknown about the new regulations, the 2026 season promises to be one of the most unpredictable in recent memory.

Race and Session Times (GMT)

The opening weekend of the season features the traditional format, with three practice sessions before qualifying sets the grid for Sunday’s race.

Friday, 6 March:
First Practice: 01:30–02:30
Second Practice: 05:00–06:00

Saturday, 7 March:
Third Practice: 01:30–02:30
Qualifying: 05:00–06:00

Sunday, 8 March:
Race: 04:00

Weather Forecast

Melbourne is expected to deliver largely dry and warm conditions across the race weekend — a welcome contrast to last year’s chaotic season opener, when heavy rain caused multiple incidents on race day. Friday looks warm and mostly dry with temperatures around 20–23°C, while Saturday may be slightly more overcast but still with a very low chance of showers. Sunday’s grand prix is forecast to be mostly sunny, with temperatures climbing to around 26°C and winds of 15–25 km/h — near-ideal conditions for the start of a new era in Formula 1.

A New Era Begins

The 2026 regulations represent the most sweeping changes in Formula 1 history, touching almost every aspect of the sport. The new cars are shorter, lighter and more nimble, while the power units now feature a near 50-50 split between electric and internal combustion energy, running on fully sustainable fuels. The familiar DRS overtaking aid has been replaced by an “overtake mode” — a burst of extra electrical power available when a driver gets within one second of the car ahead at a designated detection point. Active aerodynamics also make their debut, with front and rear wings adjusting automatically to reduce drag on straights and increase downforce through corners.

At Albert Park, the four former DRS zones have been replaced by five straight mode zones, with overtake mode activation points marked at Turns 13 and 14. Also of note on Sunday: Turn Six will be dedicated to Haas race engineer Laura Mueller and Red Bull head of strategy Hannah Schmitz, in celebration of International Women’s Day.

Ones to Watch

British 18-year-old Arvid Lindblad joins the grid at Racing Bulls as the only rookie in the 2026 line-up, while Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas have taken on the task of leading Cadillac — the 11th team on the grid — in their debut season. Pre-season testing across Barcelona and Bahrain suggested no single team will dominate, with McLaren, Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari all looking competitive heading into the opener. Whether a surprise package emerges, much like Brawn GP did in 2009, remains one of the most intriguing questions of the weekend.

What to Expect

The 5.278km Albert Park Circuit winds its way through a public park on the outskirts of Melbourne, blending flowing medium-speed corners with a handful of tight chicanes and long straights. With entirely new cars, new power units and new aerodynamic behaviour to master, the opening practice sessions will be as much about data gathering as raw pace. Tyre management, energy deployment and adapting to the active aero system will all play key roles across the weekend. With so many unknowns still to be resolved, Melbourne sets the stage for a thrilling and unpredictable start to what could be Formula 1’s most fascinating season in years.

Excellent, fast, friendly service. Sent me a personal message with a photo before pick-up to let me know where their booth was located. Their service was so good, i’d go to an event just to pick up tickets from them. 10 out of 10 would recommend.
