With an exceptional 45 goals in 39 appearances for Heerenveen in the Dutch Eredivisie, ‘Boro thought that had secured a Brazilian international capable of firing them up the Premier League table. They hadn’t. Alves was sluggish, a poor finisher, and looked completely miserable with life in the North-East. After 18 months, he’d managed a pretty shoddy ten league strikes, and was shipped off to Qatar for a fraction of the money the paid for him.
