The Brisbane Broncos qualified for the NRL Auckland Nines quarter finals after a classy win against pool opponents Parramatta.
The Broncos downed the Eels 15-14, with both sides moving through to the finals and the Roosters and Bulldogs eliminated.
With the game tied at halftime, it was the Mackay connection of Ben Barba and Josh Hoffman got their team back in front of the Eels.
Kodi Nikorima’s pass got Barba outside and he put Hoffman over to make it 11-7.
Nikorima then had a try pulled back after Barba made a long break, the referee ruling their had been a knock on in the lead up.
But Ben Hunt made the difference, chasing his own grubber which was then toed ahead for the half to fall on the ball for a four pointer.
The Broncos had got the start they wanted when young half Nikorima gapped the Eels from long range.
The pocket rocket slipped between two defenders and then raced 50 metres downfield to score under the posts.
The bonus point and conversion gave the Broncos a 7-0 lead.
Confusion reigned two minutes later when the Eels looked to have lost the ball forward but the referee allowed play on and Corey Norman scored against his old club to make it 7-all, which it stayed until halftime.
