The Broncos have showcased the exciting brand of football they will play in 2014 with a strong 20-4 victory in their opening pool match of the NRL Auckland Nines.
Ben Barba made a shining debut in club colours, having a hand in one try and scoring another at a packed Eden Park.
With the scores locked at 4-all at halftime, Andrew McCullough got the Broncos in front just two minutes into the second half when he stepped his way over near the posts.
Dale Copley missed the conversion to leave it at 8-4 in front, but the razzle dazzle was to come.
Attacking the line the Broncos kicked wide to Josh Hoffman.
Hoffman nearly scored, but a change of direction on the next play put Ben Hunt in space and he threw a beautiful dummy to score.
Ben Barba then produced a beautiful grubber through for another debutant, Stewart Mills to score.
And it was Barba who provided the cherry on top, scoring in the final minute to thrill the fans.
In the first half the Broncos blew an opportunity in the fourth minute after Hunt had created an overlap.
He got the ball to Barba who rushed a pass that failed to find an unmarked Matt Gillett.
Barba almost scored again soon after when he beat defenders with a step, but it was the Bulldogs who hit the scoreboard first.
Moses Mbye broke free and the cover couldn’t get him to give the Dogs a 4-0 lead after six minutes.
But the Broncos levelled before halftime.
Andrew McCullough created a break down the blind and sent Gillett away.
Cornered, Gillett threw a long pass infield, the ball traveling through hands to Copley, who dived over in the corner to make it 4-all at the break.
