Browns impressed by Manziel desire to join franchise.
Cleveland Browns quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains has revealed that he received a text from Johnny Manziel on the opening night of the NFL Draft.
The former Texas A&M star slid down the draft board last Thursday before eventually being selected by the Browns with the 22nd overall pick.
However, it didn’t happen without a little push from the starlet, with Loggains revealing the text that he received from Manziel as he continued to be overlooked by the other teams.
“I wish you guys would come get me. Hurry up and draft me because I want to wreck this league together,” the text read as revealed by Loggains.
“When I got that text, I forwarded it to the owner (Jimmy Haslam) and to the head coach (Mike Pettine). I’m like, ‘This guy wants to be here. He wants to be part of it.’ As soon as that happened, Mr. Haslam said, ‘Pull the trigger. We’re trading up to go get this guy,” he added, as reported by ESPN.
The Browns eventually traded up from No.26 to No.22 which sent a third-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles in order to be able to be in a position to select the former Heisman Trophy winner.
Loggains revealed that the franchise had previously tried to trade up higher than that but failed in negotiations with the Tennessee Titans for the No.11 pick and the Dallas Cowboys for the No.16 pick.
In addition, the quarterback coach went on to reveal that owner Haslam had identified Manziel as the priority throughout the process and was ultimately delighted to secure his services.
