Despite a deal to sign Christian Benteke, pen hasn’t been put to paper yet. Liverpool may be buying, but are Aston Villa selling?
Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood is confident he can convince Christian Benteke to stay at Villa Park, and has even bet money on the fact.
According to the Independent, Sherwood has made a £100 bet with a reporter that his £32.5 million striker will stay with Aston Villa. The Villa Park boss reiterated his desire to keep Benteke despite recent reports that a deal to sell Benteke to Liverpool is imminent.
Sherwood recently won a £100 bet he made with another reporter that club owner Randy Lerner wouldn’t sell the club, and felt bold enough to make another bold bet regarding his superstar striker.
“Yeah, another £100 that he will (stay at Villa Park),” Sherwood said at Aston Villa’s pre-season training.
Benteke recorded 11 goals in his last 10 league games with Aston Villa to help the club escape relegation. He was the Premier League Player of the Month in April and was a huge part of the team’s run to the FA Cup Final. Benteke has scored double-digit league goals in each of the last four years and in five of the last six.
“We want Christian here,” Sherwood said . “We want to keep our best players and Christian is certainly one of those”.
