Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon has demanded an “unprecedented” deal for captain Ryan Griffen should the club choose to trade him.
The club captain sensationally requested a move to the Greater Western Sydney Giants last Thursday following a reported fall-out with coach Brendan McCartney.
His decision prompted McCartney to resign on Friday, however Griffen has maintained that we wants a fresh start at a new club.
Gordon said the Bulldogs have yet to make a decision on the 28-year-old’s request as he still has a year to left run on his contract.
“We’ll deal with it in the smartest and (most) strategic way that we can,” Gordon told Triple M radio.
“Let’s look at Ryan Griffen, he’s just played his 200th game, captain of the club, All-Australian, one of the most credentialled guys going around.
“There wouldn’t be a player, except maybe Gary Ablett, that’s changed clubs in the last couple of years that’s had the cachet and the value that Ryan Griffen has got.
“Dealing with it on a theoretical level, if we agreed to that sort of request, then the sort of quid pro quo we’d be looking at would be pretty much unprecedented in the competition. ”
The Giants hold pick no.4 in the AFL draft, however it is likely the expansion club will need to add another draft pick or a player if they are to have any chance of landing Griffen.
