Bell and Pietersen give the home side a fighting chance.
Having lost captain Alastair Cook and Joe Root, Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen were at the crease for England after lunch in the fourth Ashes Test against Australia.
However, Trott’s poor series so far continued as the No.3 only made it 23 before Ryan Harris claimed his third scalp of the match to leave the Three Lions floundering on 51-3.
Yet the ever reliable Ian Bell joined Pietersen at the crease and the pair batted solidly throughout the afternoon session, to take the hosts to tea without further loss and Bell notched up another half-century.
