The Reds have been knocked back in attempts to sign Mata.
One of the most baffling stories of the new Premier League season seems to be Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s reluctance to play Juan Mata.
The Spaniard sat on the bench again during the tie with Manchester United on Monday and with Willian having arrived from Anzhi Makhachkala, rumours are spreading that Mata is leaving.
With this in mind Liverpool made an approach to take the 25-year-old on-loan for the season, but the Blues have knocked this request back, according to talkSPORT.
Mourinho insists that the Spain international is part of the plans at Stamford Bridge, despite the fact that the west London outfit now have seven players who operate in the same position as the attacking midfielder.
Along with new boy Willian, Eden Hazard, Oscar, Victor Moses, Kevin De Bruyne and another new signing in Andre Schurrle are all options for the manager.
Against United, Mourinho opted to start with four of those names and yet Mata still did not make it off the bench at any point during the Old Trafford stalemate.
The Reds had been hoping to bring in the midfielder as the Merseyside club looks ahead to the possibility of life without want-away striker Luis Suarez – who is wanted by Real Madrid.
Negotiations between Liverpool and Madrid for Suarez are underway.
With Daniel Sturridge looking in fine form so far this campaign, Mata would have been the perfect foil to work as the No.10 behind the Englishman, but Chelsea are clearly not keen on this idea.
It could well be that the Blues are waiting to use the Spain international as a makeweight in the bid to bring Wayne Rooney to Stamford Bridge.
