Negotiations begin between Liverpool and Real Madrid over deal for Luis Suarez.
Real Madrid have opened discussions with Liverpool over a deal that could see Luis Suarez move to Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in the remaining days of the summer transfer window.
Previously linked with a deal to move to Arsenal throughout the close-season, Liverpool have been reluctant to sell to a Premier League rival, with owner John W Henry openly mocking the Gunners’ £40,000,001 bid.
The Reds would naturally much prefer to sell to a club in a different division – if they have to sell at all – and with Suarez still hoping to leave Anfield, Real Madrid may be their preferred buyer.
Spanish publication AS claim that talks have already begun, with club owner Florentino Perez planning to fund the bid with the sale of Angel Di Maria, and potentially last season’s leading assister Mesut Ozil.
Suarez would offer a huge amount to the Real Madrid attack, and is a very different player to either Karim Benzema or Cristiano Ronaldo.
Having played on the right of a front three for Ajax prior to his Liverpool move, he could well replace both Ozil and Di Maria in that position, though the forward line is likely to be a fluid one.
Given that Carlo Ancelotti has shifted Ronaldo’s position to a more central one so that attacking the space on Real Madrid’s left flank is no longer a glaring weakness, there is still the issue left by exonerating the Portuguese superstar of any defensive work.
Suarez’s intense will to win sees him closing down the ball at every opportunity in terrier-like fashion, and he would provide balance to Ronaldo’s occasional explosiveness, as well as another potentially decisive attacking player going forward.
Real Madrid now must just test Liverpool’s resolve to keep Suarez.
