India captain MS Dhoni has been ruled out of his side’s first Test against Australia in Brisbane from December 4 to ensure his recovery from a right thumb injury.
Batsman Virat Kohli will lead the tourists for the opening test, with Dhoni returning to the helm for the remaining three games.
Wriddhiman Saha is expected to take the gloves in Dhoni’s absence, the Indian selectors have opted for another back-up in Naman Ojha.
Ojha will travel with the team for the first Test only and will return once Dhoni joins the squad.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Sunjay Patel said the decision was taken after consultation with physiotherapists and doctors.
“Dhoni is suffering from a right-thumb injury. He is on the right track,” Patel said.
“It has been further decided to rest him for one more Test, so that everything is fine. It was suggested by his physiotherapist and doctors and after that this decision was taken. It is a right thumb injury.”
