United manager Louis van Gaal is known to be a huge admirer of Netherlands midfielder Kevin Strootman and he could well have gone in for the AS Roma playmaker this summer if Strootman was not due to be ruled out for the opening months with an injury – but an injury that should be cleared up by the time the January window opens.
