The agent of ex-Melbourne player Mitch Clark says Ross Lyon should not be commenting on his client’s health and accused the Dockers of screwing up its attempt to recruit the big forward in 2011.
WA-based player agent Colin Young said he was disappointed Lyon went to public with his thoughts on Clark rather than concentrating on winning Saturday’s do-or-die clash with Port Adelaide at Patersons Stadium.
Clark look set to join the Dockers during the 2011 trade period before accepting a more lucrative four-year deal with Melbourne.
The 26-year-old retired from the game in April after being diagnosed with depression, but said this week he was aiming at making an AFL comeback.
Young said Lyon’s comments were “unusual”.
“I would have thought his total focus should be winning this week’s final, not Mitch’s health,” Young was quoted as saying by Fairfax Media.
“The entire AFL industry knows that Fremantle completely messed up the Mitchell Clark trade. Maybe Ross should speak to the CEO and find out why or how they could mess up the easiest trade I have ever been involved in, in my entire career.
“I have spoken publicly that Fremantle have never contacted me regarding Mitch coming to them next year, so Ross’ comments are unusual.
“Maybe losing the final and the altercation with a member of the public has got the better of him.”
Lyon yesterday said he was not interested in luring Clark to the club.
“Mitch, what’s his name? I think he had an opportunity to come to this club that he didn’t want to come to,” Lyon said.
“Me, personally? I can’t really speak for the list management committee. We’d probably get together.
“I understand he’s not a very well young man.
“From me at the minute, I’m a bit confused by it all from the outside. It’s a very serious issue. He seems like not a well man and mental health is clearly the issue.
“I feel pretty uncomfortable even talking about it at the minute.”
