After winning the toss and choosing to field Essex were congratulating their decision when they reduced Gloucestershire to 71-3.
However, batsman Hamish Marshall started the fightback by scoring the first century of the 2013 County Championship and was joined by partner Dan Housego shortly after.
The pair put on 229 runs before close of play on day one, with Marshall set to resume the second day on 120 and Housego on 124.
The visitors could amass a colossal first innings total if they continue their form into day two which starts at 11.00 BST today.
Glamorgan v Northamptonshire
Close of play: Glamorgan 134 all-out, Northamptonshire 108-3.
Northants won the toss and put Glamorgan into bat as bowlers Steven Crook and Andrew Hall tore through the Welsh side’s order.
No less than four home players were out for ducks whilst only three batsmen made it past 20 – bowler Graham Wagg top-scoring with 26.
Aussie seamer Trent Copeland dismissed Wagg as the Dragons could only manage 134 all-out, before Nothants captain Stephen Peters batted to an unbeaten 60 in reply.
The away side will resume day two on 108-3 at 11.00 BST today with Peters and Robert Newton at the crease.
