Mertesacker rewarded for good form for the Gunners with a new deal.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger confirms the club is in discussion with defender Per Mertesacker over a new contract at the Emirates Stadium.
The Germany international has been in great form for the Gunners over the past two seasons and has formed a great partnership at the back with Laurent Koscielny.
Therefore the north London club are looking to reward these performances by entering negotiations over extending Mertesacker’s current deal.
“We are in the process of extending Mertesacker’s contract,” Wenger was quoted by Goal.
“He has one-and-a-half years left – there is plenty of time.”
It’s been a steady process for the centre-back to become successful at the current Premier League leaders, initially struggling in England after a £10m transfer from Werder Bremen in 2010.
Mertesacker was criticised for being slow and making too many mistakes, but since then the 29-year-old has adapted to a more frantic style of football.
In fact the rise in stature of the German has seen club captain Thomas Vermaelen become marginalised under Wenger and the Belgian has been limited to just one league start this season.
Mertesacker is also an established member of the first team for the player’s national team, having earned 94 caps for Germany to date and also scoring one of three goals for the country in their last match with rivals England on Tuesday.
