Centre-back to become latest Gunners star to move on.
Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen has been tipped to become the latest of the club’s stars to move on this summer, following Bacary Sagna’s exit to Manchester City, according to Goal.com.
Vermaelen has been restricted to playing a bit part role this season as injury and the form of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny have kept him for clocking up more games.
Arsenal expect the Belgian to become their second senior defender to leave in this window following Sagna, whose transfer to Manchester City on a three-year deal was confirmed on Friday.
Vermaelen has just one year remaining on his current deal at the Emirates, and it is thought that the club won’t stand in his way should anyone meet their £8m valuation this summer.
Both Manchester United and Napoli have been linked with making a move for him this summer, though the 28-year-old has admitted that he will not be making any decisions about his future until after the World Cup, where he is starring alongside Vincent Kompany for Belgium.
Vermaelen is hoping that a good showing at the tournament will enhance his chances of landing a bigger move.
The news will likely mean that Arsenal will dip into the transfer market to find a suitable replacement for him over the summer.
