Spanish stopper set to return to Italy.
Napoli are moving closer to agreeing another deal with Liverpool for goalkeeper Pepe Reina, according to Tuttosport.
Reina spent last season on loan at Napoli, where he was a first-team regular under former Reds boss Rafael Benitez.
The 31-year-old Spanish stopper started 30 Serie A games and helped Napoli win the Coppa Italia.
Reina’s current contract with Liverpool runs until June 2016, but he is behind Belgium’s Simon Mignolet in the pecking order at Anfield.
Napoli and Liverpool are currently working on a deal that would see Reina go back to Stadio San Paolo on loan, with the Italian side paying 50 per cent of his wages.
Tuttosport suggest that the agreement could be lost if Napoli interfere in Liverpool’s attempts to sign 25-year-old Belgium international defender Toby Alderweireld, who currently plays for Atletico Madrid.
Alderweireld remained on the pitch for the whole two hours as Belgium overcame the USA 2-1 after extra-time to reach the quarter-finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup last night.
Reina also went to the super tournament in Brazil and was one of the few Spanish players to leave the event with any credibility.
After warming the bench in Spain’s first two matches, which they lost, Reina kept a clean sheet as the European nation outclassed Australia to secure a 3-0 win in their final game.
