Marica looks set to join the Gunners.
Arsenal look to be closing in on the club’s fourth new player of the summer as former Schalke 04 striker Ciprian Marica is about to sign on a free transfer, according to the player’s agent.
Marica has been a free agent since leaving the Bundesliga outfit at the end of last season and despite interest from Inter Milan, Lazio, Shakhtar Donetsk and West Ham United, the 27-year-old seems to have chosen the Gunners.
“Marica is a really great striker who has already got experience in western European football and so it’s natural that big clubs are eyeing his career,” the Romanian’s agent Ioan Becali was quoted by the Mirror.
“He’s close to joining Arsenal, but we have to wait for the next week.”
Arsene Wenger has been interested in the forward for some time and if Marica does join the club, it will be their third free signing of the summer.
Frenchmen Yaya Sanogo and Mathieu Flamini also cost nothing, yet when money was spent it was a large amount as Wenger sanctioned a club record £42.4m to be paid to Real Madrid for Mesut Ozil.
After missing out on Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez during the transfer window there are many at the Emirates Stadium who think the side still need attacking support, despite the arrival of Ozil.
Whilst Olivier Giroud has started the season strongly – three Premier League goals in as many matches – if there were an injury to the France international that would leave just Sanogo and Nicklas Bendtner available.
Marica has had a less than prolific career in front of goal, but would add some much needed depth to the squad in north London.
