The momentum is with the Oklahoma City Thunder, but the San Antonio Spurs return home hoping to take back the initiative in this series.
The Spurs undoubtedly have bad memories of two years ago when they threw away a 2-0 series lead as the Thunder stormed back to win four consecutive games.
Despite seemingly cruising this time round, the return of Serge Ibaka shifted the power in favour of Oklahoma City who now hit the road hoping to take an important step towards the NBA Finals.
Both teams have insisted that they can’t think about the past and that ultimately all that matters is executing now as each series is different, but from a Spurs perspective it will be about matching the intensity shown by their rivals.
The Thunder are a much more athletic outfit than their opponents, and point guard Russell Westbrook used to that to his advantage in his 40-point, 10-assist and five-steal effort in Game 4.
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich concedes that his team can’t match them athletically, but he wants his men to play smart and take advantage of their experience in certain situations in order to wrestle back the momentum and put the pressure back on OKC by protecting their home court advantage.
Despite concerns, both Ibaka and Reggie Jackson are expected to be fit to feature, and Thunder coach Scott Brooks has seemingly settled on his new starting line-up after discarding the ineffective duo of Thabo Sefolosha and Nick Collison.
It remains to be seen whether or not they can maintain their level of play heading into Game 5, but it could well be pivotal in terms of who will advance out of the West.
