Knights show heart in the wake of Alex McKinnon’s spinal injury.
An emotional Newcastle Knights did all they could to lift the spirits of injured team mate Alex McKinnon as they recorded a 30-0 NRL win against Cronulla on Sunday.
McKinnon remains in hospital after breaking his neck in last Monday’s game against Melbourne and the Knights were determined to play for their teammate.
Newcastle had the game well in control at half-time thanks largely to a three-try effort by centre BJ Leilua, while Darius Boyd added a fourth try to see the Knights lead 26-0 at the break.
A controversial video referee decision in the 70th minute cost Dane Gagai a fifth Knights try.
The ball appeared to be knocked backwards by Beau Scott into the arms of Gagai, but the video referee found a “no try” ruling.
They didn’t need to wait long before adding to the score, however, when Tyrone Roberts darted through the defence and raced away for a try in the 71st minute.
