The Red Devils want to complete the transfer of Madrid’s Khedira as well.
It looks set to be a busy few days of transfer business for Manchester United as after tying up a deal for Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera they then want to sign Sami Khedira from Real Madrid for £30m, reports German daily Bild.
Herrera is believed to have completed a medical at Old Trafford ahead of his own £28.7m move to the Red Devils and new manager Louis van Gaal does not want to stop there.
The Dutchman has identified central midfield as a particularly weak area for his new team and wants Khedira to come in and partner his new Spanish signing.
Both players were on United’s radar in 2013 back when David Moyes first took charge, but the Scot and chief executive Ed Woodward failed to land either midfielder – as well as missing out on Thiago Alcantara and Cesc Fabregas as well.
Moyes has since been sacked after a dismal first season in the dugout at the Theatre of Dreams and with van Gaal drafted in to rescue the club, they are keen not to make the same mistake twice.
That is why Woodward has tied up a deal for Herrera so early in the summer, whilst the arrival of Khedira would be a great double coup for the 13-time Premier League champions.
The 27-year-old has had a difficult past 12 months at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu after missing much of the campaign due to cruciate ligament injury suffered in November.
Khedira is now back to full fitness though and is currently representing Germany at the 2014 Word Cup in Brazil and is about to enter the final year of his current contract with Madrid.
That is why the Spanish giants might be convinced to sell the German now, rather than risk losing him on free transfer in 12 months time and United are ready to beat Chelsea to the midfield ace.
Blues boss Jose Mourinho is also thought to be interested in Khedira – whom he signed for Los Blancos back in 2010 – but having just bought Fabregas from Barcelona for around £27m he may have to sit this deal out.
