The ex-Red Devils manager reveals that the forward wanted the German.
Arsenal’s rise to the top of the Premier League this season is largely due to Mesut Ozil, but Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed Wayne Rooney urged the manager to bring the German to Manchester United.
In 2010, the summer Ozil signed for Real Madrid from Werder Bremen, Rooney had been impressed by the 24-year-old at the World Cup, when the attacking midfielder helped mastermind a 4-1 victory over England in the last-16.
However, Ferguson has revealed that as boss the Scot told the forward what he thought of the Englishman’s input.
“My reply was that it was none of his business who we should have gone for,” the 72-year-old was quoted by the Telegraph.
Ferguson went on to point out that during that summer Javier Hernandez was brought to the club and that the manager envisaged the Mexican and Rooney sparking a relationship.
Although Hernandez has become a firm fan’s favourite at Old Trafford, the striker has failed to make the impression on the first team that Ozil has at the Gunners.
The former United man pointed out that at the time of the Germany international joining Madrid the midfielder generally operated on the right hand side and was not the No.10 that is seen today.
Ferguson and Rooney’s relationship was clearly spiky at times, with the elder revealing that the 27-year-old did not handle the famous ‘hairdryer’ treatment well.
“His eyes would burn, as if he wanted to knock my lights out,” the former Red Devils ace continued.
