Discussions have resumed with Shaw.
The departure of Mauricio Pochetiino to Tottenham Hotspur could be followed by Luke Shaw also leaving Southampton for Manchester United, reports BBC Sport.
The Red Devils have already had a £27m bid for the left-back rejected by the Saints, but that hasn’t deterred the club, who are set to go back with an improved offer.
Negotiations of the signing of Shaw began back when David Moyes was still manager at Old Trafford, due to the 18-year-old’s impressive form over the past two years.
Moyes has since been sacked, but his replacement Louis van Gaal is understood to be just as keen to sign Shaw as the search for a long-term replacement for Patrice Evra continues.
The Frenchman has just signed a one-year extension with United, but at 33-years-old the 13-time Premier League winners are looking to the future.
Shaw had a close working relationship with Pochettino and the Argentine’s departure from the south coast is sure to affect any decision the teenager makes.
The full-back is currently with Roy Hodgson’s England team, having made the 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup ahead of Chelsea veteran Ashley Cole.
There could be a host of high profile names joining Shaw on the exit list from the Hampshire club this summer, with Rickie Lambert set to join Liverpool over the weekend.
Captain Adam Lallana, Morgan Schneiderlin, Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Jay Rodriguez have also been strongly linked with moves away.
