Real Madrid could make a surprise transfer move for Manchester United and England striker Danny Welbeck, as they seek a replacement for Juventus-bound striker Alvaro Morata.
The Daily Mirror have revealed reports that originally emerged in El Mundo Deportivo, which state Welbeck’s versatility to play up top or out wide has attracted the interest of Carlo Ancelotti.
England international Welbeck, 23, came close to leaving Old Trafford under David Moyes last season, but has since stated his intentions to fight for his position under new United boss Louis van Gaal.
Welbeck has scored 20 league goals in 90 Premier League appearances for United, and has also netted eight times in 26 international appearances. However, he could find a place in the United team even harder to achieve next season, following Van Gaal’s rebuilding process at Old Trafford.
Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal and Real Madrid winger Angel Di Maria are both thought to be closing in on moves to the Manchester club, and with the likes of Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney already ahead of him in the pecking order, he may choose to move in order to get playing time.
Madrid would surely be an appealing choice. With both Di Maria and Morata departing, there will be opportunities to stake a claim for a place in the team of last season’s Champions League winners, and Welbeck could jump at such an opportunity.
