Former England star wants United to raid Spaniards for defensive starlet.
Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has urged the club to pounce quickly to sign Real Madrid starlet Raphael Varane from under Chelsea’s radar as he believes the French youngster is the ideal man to help make their defence air tight again, according to the Daily Mail.
United are in urgent need of some reinforcements at the back after losing both Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic at the end of the season.
Ferdinand, who won six Premier League titles in his twelve year spell at Old Trafford, believes that Real Madrid’s French centre-half Raphael Varane would be the ideal replacement, although he acknowledged that it would be difficult to prise him away from the Spanish capital.
When quizzed on Twitter which central defenders he would sign for United given the choice, Ferdinand replied: “Varane…Real Madrid won’t sell though.”
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is also said to be keen on bringing the young Frenchman to Chelsea this summer having originally signed him for the Spaniards, though he too has turned his attentions elsewhere in recent weeks.
Ferdinand himself is closing in on a return to the Premier League as he is expected to sign for Queens Park Rangers in the coming days to once again link up with Harry Redknapp.
