As the Daily Star explains, Van Gaal is eager to strengthen his defensive options, having seen his backline decimated by injuries this season.
And, having been linked with Borussia Dortmund centre-back Mats Hummels, Aston Villa’s Ron Vlaar and West Ham’s Winston Reid, it appears as if 23-year-old Koulibaly is the latest name in the frame.
Koulibaly, who was linked with a move to the Premier League in 2013 while with Belgian side Genk, completed an £8m switch to Italian giants Napoli in the summer and has become one of the first names on Rafael Benitez’s teamsheet.
After previous establishing himself as one of the most formidable defenders in the Jupiler Pro League, clocking up nearly 100 appearances in all competitions, he signed a five-year contract with the Serie A side, meaning any move to Old Trafford is likely to come with a hefty price tag.
