Red Devils keen on landing German international.
Manchester United are said to be targeting Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gundogan as they look for alternatives to Roma star Kevin Strootman and Juventus’ Arturo Vidal, according to the Daily Express.
Louis Van Gaal is desperate to add some more strength to his side in the new year and is placing the Serie A pair at the top of his January wish list.
However, Roma are unwilling to sell the 24-year-old, who is close to full fitness after suffering a serious injury last season, and the Red Devils could have to pay as much as £75million for his services.
Vidal, meanwhile, is in hot water with his bosses at Juve, after being fined for his part in a nightclub brawl last week. But the Serie A champions are adamant that he will be going nowhere in the new year.
Van Gaal knows that signing either of them will be a tough ask, so he has sought out Gundogan as an alternative, who could face a difficult time getting back into the Dortmund side following a serious back injury.
