Many have been surprised that the talismanic midfielder has been allowed to get in to the last year of his contract at Anfield, and no more so than Paul Ince.
Gerrard is already a legend at the club, and while he may not be as effective as he once was, even at 34-years-old he still has plenty to offer.
“For me, Stevie G should be the first name on the Liverpool team sheet,” Ince said.
“It is sad his contract situation has been allowed to fester. You shouldn’t give anyone a contract out of sentiment but look at what he’s still doing for the club. He’s only 34 and the team struggled against Sunderland without him.”
It won’t be entirely down to the club, as the former England captain will have some decisions to make over whether he wants to finish his career in the Premier League. But Ince certainly believes that Liverpool should be doing all they can to extend their star man’s deal.
