Lyon will play no part in the knockout stages of the Champions League after they slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Gent on Tuesday night with Kalifa Coulibaly scoring this last-gasp winner in injury time.
The hosts looked to be in the ascendency as Jordan Ferri gave them the lead after just seven minutes, but Danijiel Milicevic ensured that the two sides went into the half-time interval level.
With the game at the Stade de Gerland seemingly heading towards a stalemate Coulibaly stepped up to head home a late winner for the visitors as they leapfrogged Valencia into second spot in Group H.
Zenit have already secured their place as group winners after making it five wins in five against the Spanish side earlier on Tuesday evening, but Gent will now have a real opportunity to secure their place in the knockout stages when they host Zenit on December 9.
Valencia take on Lyon knowing that a win would keep them in contention of reclaiming second spot, but it remains to be seen who prevails.
