Souness is clearly not the Brazilian’s biggest fan.
Former Liverpool and Scotland star Graeme Souness has given his opinion on Chelsea’s David Luiz ahead of the side’s Champions League encounter with Schalke 04.
Souness thinks that whilst many are huge admirers of Luiz – most notably Barcelona, who tried to sign the Brazilian this summer – the Scot thinks that the 26-year-old is not a centre-back and should not play against Schalke.
“I would not play David Luiz in this game because, for me, he’s not a centre-half,” the ex-Southampton manager wrote in his Sky Sports column.
“He takes too many risks and doesn’t sense danger early enough.
“Gary Cahill hasn’t got the ability on the ball that Luiz has, but he’s a Steady Eddie and he can defend and John Terry is still their main man and the best centre-half they’ve got.
“I would like to see those two start this game.”
The Blues have had an indifferent start to their European campaign so far, with a disappointing home loss to FC Basel being followed by a dominant away victory over Steaua Bucharest.
However, Schalke are likely to be the west London club’s toughest opponents in the group stage and after losing to Basel, caution could be a good tactic.
The Germans boast the talents of former Portsmouth and AC Milan midfielder Kevin Prince Boateng, as well as striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar and defender Benedikt Hoewdes.
It could well be a tough game for Jose Mourinho’s side in Germany, but a good run of late means they will be arrive with some self confidence.
