Gerrard set to sign two-year extension with the Reds.
Liverpool’s legendary captain Steven Gerrard is set to extend his contract at Anfield, reports BBC Sport.
The England and Liverpool captain has scored 159 goals in 630 appearances for Liverpool, winning a Champions League, a Uefa Cup, two FA Cups and two League Cups.
Here’s our countdown of the top five moments of Liverpool’s greatest ever midfielder.
5) Steven Gerrard announces his arrival with a 30-yarder against Manchester United…
Gerrard was a baby-faced 20-year-old back in the 2000/01 season, when he picked up a bobbling ball close to the halfway line – took it under control – and belted it into the top corner of Fabien Barthez’s net. Anfield had a new hero – Steven Gerrard had arrived
4) Gerrard bags a hat-trick in the Mersyeside derby on his 400th league appearance…
Fast forward 12 years, and Gerrard is about to make his 400th league appearance for Liverpool, in a crucial Merseyside derby at home to Everton. The Reds captain is head and shoulders above anyone on the park, scoring three sublime goals from central midfield in one of his best ever performances for the club.
3) The header that set clawed Liverpool back into the Champions League final…
We all know the story – 3-0 down at half-time to a far superior AC Milan team. The best Liverpool can hope for is keeping the score down and avoiding embarrassment. But Gerrard has other ideas. His fantastic header clawed a goal back for his side, and as he runs back to the centre-cirle, he urges the sea of red to get behind his team. It worked, and Liverpool somehow scored two more goals to tie the game, and eventually win on penalties in the greatest European Cup final of all time.
2) The last-minute screamer against Olympiacos in 2004…
Ironically, it is Everton legend Andy Gray who has helped to make this thunderbolt an iconic moment of Gerrard’s career. The hysterical commentary that accompanied the last minute strike that sent Liverpool through their Champions League group in the 2004/05 season is now ingrained into football legend. “OHH YA BEAUTY! WHAT A HIT SON. WHAT A HIT,” bellows Gray, as Gerard arrows a fantastic half-volley into the corner of the net – setting the tone for Liverpool’s glorious Champions League campaign in 2005.
1) The 40-yard last minute FA Cup final equaliser against West Ham…
Who says lightning never strikes twice, eh? Cometh the hour, cometh the man. A year on from Liverpool’s Champions League win, they find themselves 3-2 down to West Ham in the final of the FA Cup. In pure ‘Roy of the Rovers’ style, Gerrard smashes a half-volley in from closer to the halfway line than the goal, to send the travelling Liverpool fans wild. They went on to win the match on penalties, in what is now known as ‘The Gerrard final’.
