Liverpool were close to signing former Barcelona ace Seydou Keita this January, reports Goal.
The Reds attempted to sign the 34-year-old Malian this January, but missed out on him just like they missed out on all their other top targets. Yevhen Konoplyanka’s proposed move fell through, Mohamed Salah joined Chelsea instead, and Tom Ince decided to join Crystal Palace instead!
Keita has admitted that while Liverpool tempted him, he decided to leave his Chinese club Dalian Aerbin to sign for La Liga club Valencia.
“When my agent told me that Valencia called to sign me, I didn’t hesitate for even a second,” said the Champions League winner.
“I had very advanced talks with Liverpool, but I wanted to come here and I made that known to my agent.
“When I have come to play at Mestalle with Sevilla or Barcelona I worked very hard to win, because it’s a very big club with very good fans and which plays football that I like.”
As it happened, Liverpool failed to bring in any new faces during the January window, much to the annoyance of their supporters.
If the Reds miss out on a top four finish this term as a result of their thin squad, they could well see the miserable January transfer window as the catalyst.
