Rooney’s representatives have rejected approaches from United chiefs to discuss a new deal.
Chelsea have been given fresh hope in their pursuit of Wayne Rooney after the England striker rejected contract talks with Manchester United, reports Goal.com.
Rooney, 27, said this week that he was “happy” and “settled” under David Moyes at Old Trafford but is still interested in leaving the club.
The forward’s contract expires in summer 2015 and Rooney’s representatives have so far rejected the chance to discuss an extension with United chiefs.
His decision could see him leave Old Trafford next summer or even in January, with Stamford Bridge a possible destination.
Chelsea had two bids for the former Everton striker rejected this summer, with United adamant that they would not sell to a title rival.
But the Red Devils may have no choice but to listen to a proposal from Chelsea if Rooney backs them into a corner in January or next summer.
Rooney wants to join an established Champions League club where his position as central striker will be unquestioned.
The former Everton man admitted that his desire to leave United at the end of last season was a result of Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to play him in midfield.
Chelsea are in desperate need a world class centre forward, with Fernando Torres, Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o yet to score a league goal between them this season.
