Mexican side Club America celebrated their 98th birthday on Sunday.
Club America are one of the oldest, most successful, and well-supported sides in Mexico. Founded in 1916, the team celebrated their 98th birthday over the weekend – meaning Pachuca (1901) and Chivas (1906) are the only active teams that are older than the Mexico City-based national institution.
Playing in the famous Azteca stadium, they have won 11 Mexican titles and 5 domestic cups.
‘Las Aguilas’ are not only one of Mexico’s most decorated clubs, but are also one of the most successful club sides in the world. They have won eight FIFA recognised international titles in their 98-year history, making them the most successful continental team in the CONCACAF region and tying them with Santos (Brazil), Club Olympia (Paraguay) and Etoile du Sahel (Tunisia) worldwide.
They currently top the table in Mexico’s 2014 Apertura championship with 26 points from 12 games. They are 2 points clear of second-placed Atlas with 5 games remaining in the regular season.
