It looks like brilliant Spanish midfielder Cesc Fabregas will be returning to the Premier League, but to West London instead of North London…
Spanish publication El Mundo Deportivo claims today that Barcelona’s 27-year-old midfielder will sign for Chelsea instead of Arsenal, as had previously been suggested.
The same paper broke the news that Fabregas had decided to leave the Nou Camp this summer, following a season that saw him booed by his own fans after a trophyless season.
He did register 14 assists and score nine goals in La Liga and the Champions League combined, but many Barcelona fans believed he still wasn’t living up to his potential, and as such – rumours began circling that he would be allowed to leave this summer.
Liverpool were reportedly leading the race for Fabregas, while Manchester United have also been linked to the World Cup ace – but it appears that the creative midfielder might be heading to Stamford Bridge as a replacement for the departing Frank Lampard instead.
The legendary English midfielder is expected to sign for New York City FC after his contract expired this summer, and Fabregas would come in as a top-notch ready replacement.
Cesc proved during his tenure with Arsenal between 2003 and 2011 that he’s more than capable of playing in the Premier League. His passing is exceptional, and he has the guile and vision to slip teammates through on goal practically at will. In England, he seemed to enjoy the pace and physicality of the game, which has led to his influence arguably declining while back at his boyhood club Barcelona.
The news will undoubtedly cause huge upset among Arsenal fans, who were desperate for Fabregas to make a prodigal return to the Emirates.
