The Portuguese coach is looking to sign Khedira.
Real Madrid’s injured midfield star Sami Khedira has emerged as a transfer target for Chelsea as Jose Mourinho looks to sign his former player, according to talkSPORT.
The German was signed by Mourinho when the manager first took over at the Santiago Bernabeu in 2010, joining from Stuttgart in a deal worth around £11.5m.
Khedira won La Liga and the Copa del Rey under the guidance of the Portuguese coach and the 26-year-old has played 141 matches for Los Blancos since.
Unfortunately the Germany international has been absent for much of this season after damaging his cruciate ligament in November and isn’t expected to return to first team action until the summer.
It’s meant that Khedira has been limited to just 15 appearances in all competitions in 2013/14, but the midfield ace is still hopeful of making the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
Mourinho wants to recruit in defensive midfield as there are question marks over the futures of Frank Lampard, John Obi Mikel and David Luiz at Stamford Bridge.
At 35-years-old Lampard is approaching the end of his career and with the Englishman’s contract expiring in the summer, it’s unknown whether the Blues will offer the veteran a new deal.
Luiz meanwhile is strongly linked with a move away from west London as the Brazilian is finding opportunities limited due to the rise in prominence of Gary Cahill and captain John Terry in central defence.
As for Mikel, Mourinho is not the biggest fan of the Nigeria international and it seems the only players in the position guaranteed to stay are Ramires and new £20.75m signing Nemanja Matic.
