Chelsea are hoping to put together a last-minute bid for Real Madrid and Germany midfielder Sami Khedira, according to reports from Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, as they attempt to beat Arsenal to the signing of the experienced central player.
Khedira is hot property this summer, as he and Real Madrid look unlikely to extend a contract that runs out in just twelve months time, in part due to the injury problems that plagued his 2013/14 campaign but also due to the imminent arrival of Khedira’s international Toni Kroos to bolster the Bernabeu midfield.
The 27 year-old, who arrived in the public consciousness with his performances for Germany at the 2010 World Cup, has blossomed into one of the world’s finest holding midfielders since he was taken from Vfb Stuttgart to the Spanish capital after the conclusion of that tournament.
Despite the club winning the Champions League last season, the final being a game in which Khedira recovered to take part, Carlo Ancelotti appears to want to shake up his midfield ahead of an assault on the La Liga title that was won by Real’s bitter city rivals Atletico Madrid last season.
For Khedira this looks to mean the exit door and possibly the Premier League, with the two biggest London clubs locked in a battle to give him a new home in the capital.
