The Daily Mail have claimed that Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester City are set to fight it out for the signing of Spanish midfielder Jose Callejon from Serie A side Napoli.
Callejon joined Rafa Benitez in Naples last summer after leaving Real Madrid, but his stock has risen after a highly successful first season with the club in which he bagged himself twenty goals in all competitions.
27 year-old Callejon has spent the majority of his career at Real Madrid, graduating from their youth system and going on to make more than 100 appearances for the Bernabeu club, either side of a spell with fellow La Liga side Espanyol.
It is undoubted that the best season of Callejon’s career came upon his arrival at Napoli, though, with the Spaniard providing the main support to striker Gonzalo Higuain both in terms of creativity and scoring goals himself.
Both Chelsea and Manchester City are keen to add to their squads ahead of a new season in which both are likely to be fighting it out on multiple fronts, but the multitude of attacking midfield talent at both clubs means that Callejon may be arriving at either club as little more than back up.
With this in mind, as well as the fact that the Italian club would demand at least £10 million for Callejon, a move to the Premier League seems to be a long way away for a man who was perhaps unfortunate to miss out on the Spain squad for the World Cup.
