Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says that his star player Eden Hazard is the best young player in the world, and has backed the Belgian flyer to break records for the Blues.
Frank Lampard became the west London club’s all time record goalscorer in May 2013, and has since extended his tally to 209 goals.
The Blues legend allowed Hazard to take a penalty against Newcastle United, sacrificing his usual duty so that the Belgian could complete a hat-trick, and Mourinho says that was hugely significant.
“Frank, when he allowed Eden to take the penalty, he opened the door for that to happen,” said Mourinho.
“If the kid also has a chance to score on penalties, he can do it.”
Hazard, who has just turned 23 years old, has scored 27 times for Chelsea in 95 matches, but is scoring almost a goal every other game this season.
Lampard is 35 years old, and if Hazard stays at Stamford Bridge until the same age, he has twelve years to reach the Englishman’s total figure.
Suddenly that number seems eminently achievable.
