The expected new Barca head coach wants Luiz at the Nou Camp.
It’s understood that Jose Mourinho is ready to sell David Luiz and the Chelsea defender is set to complete a £30m transfer to Barcelona, reports the Times.
Current Barca head coach Gerardo Martino is expected to be sacked following the final La Liga game of the season on Sunday – even if he guides the team to the title by beating Atletico Madrid.
The Spanish giants have already lined up Celta Vigo manager and former star Luis Enrique as Martino’s replacement and the 44 year-old is keen to bring Luiz to the Nou Camp.
The Brazilian has spoken to the Catalans and agreed personal terms, with the deal expected to be completed after the 27 year-old has competed with his country at the 2014 World Cup – with the nation sanctioning any negotiations with their players between May 26 and their exit from the tournament.
Mourinho is doubtful of Luiz’s defensive capabilities and this outcome looks like the best for all parties.
Barca are keen to find a consistent partner for Gerard Pique in central defence due to captain Carles Puyol’s impending departure and the South American’s passing style would fit into their tactics.
Meanwhile the Blues would make a healthy profit on the £21.2m they spent on Luiz back in 2011, in a move that saw them acquire the Brazil international from Benfica.
The money they receive from the sale of the defensive ace would help push through the £32m deal to sign Diego Costa from Atletico, with the west Londoners having to change their approach in the transfer market to adhere to Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rule.
